Natalia DUMITRESCO

(1915 - 1997)

Natalia Dumitresco was a prominent Romanian-born French painter and sculptor, known for her abstract and geometric works. She was born on December 20, 1915, in Bucharest, Romania. Dumitresco studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bucharest and later moved to Paris in 1947, where she became a central figure in the European avant-garde art movement.

In Paris, she joined the artistic circles and became closely associated with several prominent artists, including her husband, the French sculptor Alexandre Istrati, whom she married in 1948. Dumitresco and Istrati worked collaboratively and were both influenced by the abstract movement, particularly the works of Constantin Brâncuși, another Romanian artist who had made significant contributions to modern art.

Their friendship with Brâncuși lasted a lifetime, and as a testament to their special relationship, Brâncuși named the Dumitresco-Istrati couple as his executors. This appointment reflects the profound mutual trust and admiration shared among these artists.

Dumitresco's work is characterized by its emphasis on form, color, and structure, often exploring the interplay between light and shadow. She exhibited extensively across Europe and her work was well-received for its innovation and depth.

Throughout her career, Dumitresco received numerous accolades and her works were included in major collections and exhibitions worldwide. She passed away on July 3, 1997, leaving behind a legacy of significant contributions to abstract art and sculpture.
