IBE DAHLQUIST

(1924 – 1996)

Ibe Dahlquist ranks as one of Sweden’s most prominent contemporary silversmiths. Ibe Dahlquist studied at the Swedish School of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm, after which, she started her silver workshop in Visby, with Mr Olof Barve where they both maintained close cooperation for almost 30 years, with Dahlquist focusing on the designs and Barve executing them. A breakthrough came in the mid-50’s with the exhibition “Contemporary Jewelry” where they showed off a series set in silver with fossils and rocks picked on Gotland beaches.
Early designs by Dahlquist often show organic yet geometric expression, which shows how nature serves as both an inspiration and incorporates unworked materials. From 1965, Dahlquist employee of George Jensen and it was here she created more austere modernist jewellery. Rhythmic patterns and repeated elements still were present in her designs.
She has had many exhibitions in Sweden and elsewhere and her work is on display in Goldsmith’s Hall, London and in many Swedish museums. In addition to her workshop she has designed jewelry for the Georg Jensen silversmithy since 1965s.
