ANTONIO PINEDA

In 1941 at the age of 22, Antonio Pineda opened his own workshop in his hometown of Taxco after working and studying with other notable artists and silver workshops, including William Spratling. His reputation was launched in 1944 when he participated in an international exposition in San Francisco at the Palace of the Legion of Honor, where his collection of some eighty pieces were bought entirely by Gump’s. This relationship continued for many years with Gump’s supplying the stones and Pineda designing and producing the jewelry. In 1956, Pineda had established his operation of over one hundred and sixty craftspeople, creating jewelry and sculpture in two different workshops. Building influence from Pre-Conquest motifs to his more successful modernist aesthetic, his pieces are still sought after by collectors.
