SOPHIA VARI

(1940-2023)

Born in Athens in 1940, to a Greek father and a Hungarian mother, Sophia Vari spent part of her childhood in Greece and Switzerland. She studied in England and France (École des Beaux-Arts, Paris in 1958). It was there that she became acquainted with modern trends in sculpture, namely Cubism and Surrealism. In 1978 she met Columbian artist Fernando Botero with whom she lives between France, Italy, Colombia and the US.

Her work is an investigation of form and balance, strongly influenced by Mayan, Egyptian, Olmec, and Cycladic traditions as well as Ancient and Baroque aesthetics.

Her artist name « Vari » draws on the name of the Greek village where her family house was. Specializing in bronze sculpture, she is also known for collages, oils, watercolors and gained widespread recognition for her stunning jewellery, or « wearable sculptures ». They are made from models created of plastiline. They combines geometric lines and sensual curves in silver, gold and ebony.
Her sculptures and jewels titles are inspired by Greek mythology.

Her work has been internationally exhibited.
Such as Museum’s exhibitions including the Palazzo Vecchio, Florence; the Palazzo Bricherassio, Torino; The Ludwig Museum, Kombletz; the Pera Museum, Istanbul…

She has had more then 100 one-person exhibitions.

One of Vari’s main concerns has been the integration of her monumental sculptures within the cities in which they are exhibited all over the world.
Outdoor solo exhibitions of Vari’s monumental sculptures have taken place in cities such as Paris, Rome, Monte-Carlo, Baden-Baden, Geneva, Pietrasanta, Athens, Madrid and Cartagena de Indias, New York, among others.
