GIO POMODORO

Italy, 1930-2002

Italian Sculptor and Jewellery Artist

Gio Pomodoro was an Italian sculptor and goldsmith, born in Orciano di Pesaro in 1930. A major figure in post-war Italian sculpture, he developed a distinctive artistic language based on geometric abstraction, organic forms and the interplay of light, space and movement.

Alongside his monumental sculptures, Pomodoro explored jewellery as an intimate form of sculptural expression. From the 1950s onwards, he created innovative pieces in gold and silver, often incorporating precious and semi-precious stones. His jewellery reflects the same formal experimentation found in his sculptures, transforming precious materials into miniature works of art.

Among the skilled goldsmiths who brought his jewellery designs to life was his cousin, Marcello Lissoni (1945–1999), himself an accomplished goldsmith and jewellery artist. Their collaboration illustrates the close relationship between artistic conception and exceptional craftsmanship in Italian post-war jewellery.

His work has been exhibited internationally and is represented in important museum collections. Gio Pomodoro died in Milan in 2002.
