CHRISTIAN ASTUGUEVIEILLE
France, 1946-2026
Christian Astuguevieille was a French artist, designer and creative director whose singular practice explored the boundaries between sculpture, furniture, jewellery and perfumery. Drawing inspiration from ancient Asian and Oceanian cultures, Japanese aesthetics and the philosophy of wabi-sabi, he developed a distinctive visual language rooted in texture, tactility and the transformation of everyday objects.
From the 1980s onwards, Astuguevieille became renowned for his sculptural furniture and objects wrapped in natural hemp rope, raffia and other tactile materials, transforming familiar forms into enigmatic, almost ritualistic creations. His work extended to jewellery, ceramics, drawings and an imaginary universe populated by totemic figures and invented symbols. His creations have been exhibited in galleries and museums internationally, reflecting an artistic vision that consistently challenged conventional distinctions between art, design and craftsmanship.
Alongside his artistic practice, Astuguevieille established an influential career in the world of fragrance. After working as artistic director for houses including Molinard, Rochas and Nina Ricci, he began a landmark collaboration with Rei Kawakubo at Comme des Garçons Parfums in the 1990s. Together, they redefined contemporary perfumery through an experimental, conceptual approach that challenged traditional ideas of beauty and olfactory harmony.
Throughout his career, Christian Astuguevieille remained an independent and unclassifiable creator, guided by curiosity, a fascination with the senses and a desire to transform the familiar into something unexpected.
